When Mailer & Breslin Ran For Office

Author Lee Siegel remembers when Norman Mailer ran for Mayor of New York.  It was 1969 and his running mate was writer and activist journalist Jimmy Breslin.  Mr. Siegel misses when candidates for Mayor and some of the Mayors themselves were big and bold and exciting.

"Mailer’s ideas were as ambitious as the city itself. His platform’s central plank was making New York the 51st state. He wanted to put free bicycles in city parks and to ban cars from Manhattan. He proposed subsidized day care, giving methadone to addicts, requiring the police to live in the neighborhoods they served and converting dilapidated waterfronts to affordable housing."

It appears Mayor Bloomberg's technocratic style and the current batch of overly managed candidates for the worlds second hardest elected office leaves him cold and yearning for a far more exciting time in New York Politics.

I was 9/10 when the Mailer/Breslin ticket tried - I wish I would have been a little older so I could have appreciated in real time.

It all sounds so exciting, glamorous and fun!

Apparently Gore Vidal Had Sex

I adored Gore Vidal!..........

I know I know it may be an over the top kind of statement but I did.

I think I read every novel (I could be wrong) his essays about the world in which he lived were at times out there but I rarely disagreed with his premise and his television appearances were legendary.

I grew up on Gore Vidal.

I read "The City and the Pillar" during my coming out process and even though it was written in 1947 it was startling in is frankness and oddly I found it comforting.  I knew it was not going to be easy but I had to be me.

Do yourself a favor and watch "The Best Man" he wrote the screen play based on his play.

I could write for days about the impact Gore Vidal had on our culture, our art, our movies, our theater and my life, and I may at another time.

In November "In Bed With Gore Vidal - Hustlers, Hollywood and the Private Life of an American Master" will be published. Apparently the book details Mr. Vidal's sex life; something he refused to discuss.

Do we really need to know?

Will I buy the book?

I may.

Congress - There is an app for it

I am like a pig in shit over this app "Congress" by the Sunlight Foundation.

With just a touch you will be able call his/her office, research the voting record, learn about committees he/she serves on, get instant access to his or her website, see what bills or lack of bills your member sponsored and view a map of the district.  You will also be able to look up other members.

I predict hours and hours of nerd fun in my future.

4th of July Kazoo Parade in Nazareth, Pa

For the 9th straight year a crowd of people will march through Nazareth, starting at the High School they will  head into downtown, walk around the very charming Nazareth circle and head down Main Street and end up in Borough Council Chambers.  All the while playing or trying to play a kazoo.

For the past few years I have had every good intention to wake up a little early and head to Nazareth to be part of this charming event and every year I wake up early and go "I think I just want to stay home and rest.  I am not sure what this year will bring but if you are not lazy and want to join in the fun head to Nazareth, PA...Kazoos will be provided by the sponsors.  The Nazareth-Bath Area Chamber of Commerce and Lafayette Ambassador Bank.

WE ARE........

Any fan of college football is familiar with the Penn State cheer of WE ARE.....PENN STATE.  It is a rallying cry used to cheer on the Nittany Lions.

In 1948 the Penn State football team was invited to play in the New Years day Cotton Bowl held in
Dallas Texas, their opponent was Southern Methodist University (SMU). In 1948 Penn State had very few black students and only two black players on the football team. For the first time in school history a young black student was a starter.

In 1948 segregation was still very much in place in Texas and SMU was a segregated university.  SMU officials sought out a meeting with the Penn State to request the university leave it's two black student athlete's home or at least off the field.

When told of this proposed meeting Penn State team captain Steve Suhey proclaimed at a team meeting "We are Penn State....There will be no meetings".

Wally Trippet; one of the black players did play in the 1948 Cotton bowl and he scored the touchdown that allowed Penn State to tie the game for a final score of 13 - 13.  Penn State ended the 1948 season undefeated.

WE ARE....PENN STATE
